Cesspool Pumping

Cesspool pumping is the single most common job on this side of the island, and it is what we do most. A cesspool is a pit in the lava with no tank in front of it, so everything from the house lands in the same hole: liquid soaks out through the rock, solids and grease build up on the bottom and the walls. Over the years that buildup seals the rock, the pit holds more and drains less, and one day a heavy Hilo rain or a houseful of guests pushes it over. We pump cesspools across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We locate the pit, open the lid or cap, pump it down completely, remove the sludge layer rather than just skimming the liquid, and tell you straight how fast it is refilling and how much life the pit has left. The cheapest cesspool job is the pump-out you do on time; the most expensive is the conversion you are forced into after a backup.

Why a cesspool fills faster every year

Unlike a septic tank, a cesspool has nothing settling the solids before they reach the rock. Grease, paper and sludge coat the walls and floor of the pit and slowly plug the cracks the liquid used to drain through. The pit does not get bigger, so as the drainage closes off the water level climbs. Pumping on a schedule removes that buildup before it seals the rock for good. Once a cesspool stops taking water at all, pumping becomes a stopgap and the conversation turns to conversion.

Reading the pit while it is open

The useful part of a pump-out happens after the truck is running. We watch how fast the pit refills from the surrounding rock, which tells us whether groundwater is coming in, look at the walls for collapse or heavy sludge coating, check the inlet pipe from the house, and note the lid and cover condition. That is how you learn whether your cesspool has another ten years or two, and we put it in plain words before we leave.

Finding a cesspool nobody has opened in twenty years

Plenty of Puna and Hamakua homes changed hands with no idea where the cesspool is. Lids get buried under cinder, lawn or a lanai, and some pits only show as a capped pipe. We locate from the plumbing exit, the lot layout and probing, open it up, and can mark the spot so the next pump-out is quick.

Cesspool Pumping: Questions We Hear a Lot

How do I know my cesspool needs pumping?
Slow drains and gurgling toilets throughout the house, a sewage smell in the yard after rain, wet or spongy ground near the pit, or the water level sitting near the top when you lift the lid. If it has been more than two or three years, or you have never had it done since buying the house, schedule it before the symptoms start.
My cesspool backs up every time it rains hard. Is that normal?
It is common in Puna and Hilo, and it is a warning. Heavy rain saturates the rock around the pit so it cannot take any more from the house, and a pit that is already half full of sludge has no buffer. A thorough pump-out often buys real relief, and the refill rate we see while pumping tells us whether the pit is simply full or has stopped draining altogether.
Can you pump a cesspool on a catchment lot without contaminating my water tank?
Yes. We keep the hose run and any spill well clear of the catchment tank and its gutters, and we work from the downhill side where we can. If your cesspool and your catchment sit unusually close together, we will point it out, because that is also something an inspector will flag at a sale.
Will pumping fix a cesspool that has stopped draining?
It relieves the backup and gives you time, but if the rock around the pit has sealed, the pit will fill again on household use alone. We will tell you honestly if that is what we see. At that point the options are a new pit where the county still allows one, or a conversion to septic, and we can walk you through both.
