Cesspool Pumping in Hawaiian Beaches

Cesspool pumping is the single most common job on this side of the island, and it is what we do most. A cesspool is a pit in the lava with no tank in front of it, so everything from the house lands in the same hole: liquid soaks out through the rock, solids and grease build up on the bottom and the walls. Over the years that buildup seals the rock, the pit holds more and drains less, and one day a heavy Hilo rain or a houseful of guests pushes it over. We pump cesspools across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We locate the pit, open the lid or cap, pump it down completely, remove the sludge layer rather than just skimming the liquid, and tell you straight how fast it is refilling and how much life the pit has left. The cheapest cesspool job is the pump-out you do on time; the most expensive is the conversion you are forced into after a backup.

Cesspool and septic service in Hawaiian Beaches

Hawaiian Beaches sits on the Puna coast north of Pahoa, a subdivision of modest lots along Kahakai Boulevard on streets named for fish, with Hawaiian Shores next door and the ocean a short walk makai. It is low, close to sea level, and warm, with trade-wind rain instead of the upland deluges, and it is one of the more affordable neighborhoods in Puna, which means a steady flow of first-time buyers and a lot of long-held family homes. Nearly every house is on catchment, and nearly every house is on a cesspool or a septic system. The lots are smaller than the acre and three-acre subdivisions inland, so the house, the catchment tank, the cesspool and the neighbor’s cesspool all sit close together, and the coastal rock holds groundwater near the surface. That combination makes Hawaiian Beaches the place where a cesspool is most likely to fill from below, and where a conversion has to be designed carefully to fit the setbacks on a small lot, often with an aerobic treatment unit instead of a full leach field. We pump, inspect, convert and repair systems in Hawaiian Beaches and Hawaiian Shores regularly. Tell us the street and what the system is doing and we will quote it straight.

  • Complete pump-out: liquid, floating grease and the bottom sludge layer
  • Pit located and opened even with no records or a buried lid
  • Refill rate watched so you know how the rock is draining
  • Walls, inlet and cover checked while the pit is open
  • Honest estimate of how much life the cesspool has left
  • Location marked so the next service is fast

Common Cesspool & Septic Issues in Hawaiian Beaches

The cesspool and septic problems we see most around here, and how we handle them.

Cesspools near the water table

This close to sea level a cesspool can sit in groundwater. It fills from the rock, not just from the house, and sludge builds up in a pit that never fully drains. We watch the refill while pumping and tell you honestly how much the pit is doing for you and whether conversion is the real answer.

Small lots and tight setbacks

On a Hawaiian Beaches lot the catchment tank, the house, the pit and the property lines leave little room. Conversions here often mean an aerobic treatment unit, which needs less ground than a conventional field. We lay it out on site and quote the system that fits.

First-time buyers and family homes changing hands

Affordable coastal lots draw first-time owners, and long-held homes are passing to the next generation or to new buyers. Both want to know what the cesspool is doing and what the state deadline means. We inspect for closings and explain it in plain words.

Cesspool Pumping in Hawaiian Beaches: FAQs

Do you serve Hawaiian Beaches and Hawaiian Shores?
Yes. Both subdivisions are regular stops for us on the Puna coast. Tell us the street and whether the pit is in the front or back yard and we will come prepared.
My cesspool is always wet even in dry weather. Why?
Groundwater. Near the coast the water table is close to the surface and the pit sits in it, so it never drains empty. It can still work as long as there is room for household flow, but the sludge needs pumping regularly, and when it stops keeping up the fix is conversion rather than another pump-out.
Can a cesspool on a small coastal lot be converted at all?
Almost always, with the right system. Where a conventional leach field will not fit the setbacks, an aerobic treatment unit does more of the work in the tank and needs less ground. We walk the lot, confirm what the Department of Health will approve, and quote it in writing.
How do I know my cesspool needs pumping?
Slow drains and gurgling toilets throughout the house, a sewage smell in the yard after rain, wet or spongy ground near the pit, or the water level sitting near the top when you lift the lid. If it has been more than two or three years, or you have never had it done since buying the house, schedule it before the symptoms start.
My cesspool backs up every time it rains hard. Is that normal?
It is common in Puna and Hilo, and it is a warning. Heavy rain saturates the rock around the pit so it cannot take any more from the house, and a pit that is already half full of sludge has no buffer. A thorough pump-out often buys real relief, and the refill rate we see while pumping tells us whether the pit is simply full or has stopped draining altogether.
Can you pump a cesspool on a catchment lot without contaminating my water tank?
Yes. We keep the hose run and any spill well clear of the catchment tank and its gutters, and we work from the downhill side where we can. If your cesspool and your catchment sit unusually close together, we will point it out, because that is also something an inspector will flag at a sale.
Will pumping fix a cesspool that has stopped draining?
It relieves the backup and gives you time, but if the rock around the pit has sealed, the pit will fill again on household use alone. We will tell you honestly if that is what we see. At that point the options are a new pit where the county still allows one, or a conversion to septic, and we can walk you through both.
