Your Local Cesspool & Septic Crew: Pumping, Inspections & Conversions.

We’re a full-service cesspool and septic company based in Hilo and working all of East Hawaii: the town, the big Puna subdivisions out to Pahoa and up to Volcano, and the Hamakua coast north to Laupahoehoe. A routine pump-out, a backup that needs fixing today, a cesspool that stopped draining after a week of rain, an inspection before you buy or sell, or a conversion to septic ahead of the state deadline. We handle the whole system, and we come to your property to do it.

Out here most homes are not on county sewer. They run on a cesspool drilled into the lava or on a septic tank with a leach field, usually next to a rainwater catchment tank, in ground that gets well over a hundred inches of rain a year. That is its own kind of wastewater work, and it is the only kind we do. Tell us where the system is and what it’s doing, and we’ll give you a straight answer, a real price, and a crew that knows how to work a lava-rock lot without wrecking your yard.

What We Do

From a routine pump-out to a full cesspool conversion, here’s what we handle for East Hawaii homeowners.

Cesspool & Septic Services

We are a full-service cesspool and septic company for East Hawaii: Hilo town and the homes above it, the big Puna subdivisions from Keaau out to Pahoa and up to Volcano, and the Hamakua coast north to Laupahoehoe. Most homes on this side of the island are not on county sewer. Out here a house runs on a cesspool, a pit drilled or dug into the lava rock, or on a septic tank with a leach field or seepage bed, and either way that system needs to be pumped on a schedule and looked after. We pump cesspools and septic tanks, inspect systems for home sales, convert cesspools to septic ahead of the state deadline, install and repair septic systems, and answer the backup calls that cannot wait. You tell us roughly where the system is and what it is doing, and you get a straight answer and a real price. No upsell, no scare talk, just a crew that knows how wastewater behaves in lava rock and in 150 inches of rain a year.

Cesspool Pumping

Cesspool pumping is the single most common job on this side of the island, and it is what we do most. A cesspool is a pit in the lava with no tank in front of it, so everything from the house lands in the same hole: liquid soaks out through the rock, solids and grease build up on the bottom and the walls. Over the years that buildup seals the rock, the pit holds more and drains less, and one day a heavy Hilo rain or a houseful of guests pushes it over. We pump cesspools across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We locate the pit, open the lid or cap, pump it down completely, remove the sludge layer rather than just skimming the liquid, and tell you straight how fast it is refilling and how much life the pit has left. The cheapest cesspool job is the pump-out you do on time; the most expensive is the conversion you are forced into after a backup.

Septic Tank Pumping & Cleaning

If your home is one of the newer builds or converted systems on this side of the island, you have a septic tank instead of a cesspool, and it needs pumping just the same. Solids settle to the bottom of the tank, grease and scum float to the top, and the clear liquid in between flows out to a leach field or seepage bed in the lava. Pumping removes the solids and scum before they can wash out and clog the field, which is the expensive part of the system and the hardest part to rebuild in rock. We pump and clean septic tanks across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We locate and open the tank, pump it down completely, break up and remove the packed sludge rather than skimming the liquid, check the inlet and outlet baffles and the lids, and give you a realistic interval based on your tank size and household. Converted cesspool systems, vacation rentals around Volcano and Hilo, and homes bought with no service history are the ones that most often need the full cleaning rather than a quick pump.

Cesspool to Septic Conversion

Hawaii has set a deadline for every cesspool in the state to be converted or closed, and nowhere does that land harder than East Hawaii, where whole subdivisions were built on cesspools drilled into the lava. A conversion means closing the pit and installing a permitted individual wastewater system in its place: typically a septic tank with a leach field or seepage bed, or an aerobic treatment unit where the lot is too small or too wet for a conventional field. We handle cesspool-to-septic conversions across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast, from the site evaluation and the design that the Department of Health requires through the excavation, the tank and field installation, and the final inspection. Lava changes everything about this work. There is little or no soil, so most fields here are built on imported fill, and a lot that looks flat and easy may sit on a lava tube or on pahoehoe that will not break without a hammer. We look at your lot first, tell you which system actually fits it, and give you a real number before anything is dug.

Cesspool & Septic Inspections

Almost every home sale on this side of the island involves a cesspool or a septic system, and almost every buyer, agent and lender now wants it pumped and inspected before closing. We inspect cesspools and septic systems for buyers, sellers and owners across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. For a cesspool we locate and open the pit, pump it down so we can see the walls and the floor, watch how fast it refills, check the inlet and the cover, and note how close it sits to the catchment tank and the property lines. For a septic system we open the tank, measure sludge and scum, check baffles, lids and risers, run water from the house to see how it handles flow, and walk the leach field or seepage bed for wet ground or odor. You get a plain written summary of what you have, what condition it is in, and what it will need, so a buyer can decide with open eyes, a seller can hand over proof, and nobody is arguing about a wastewater system the week before closing.

Septic System Installation & Repair

New construction in East Hawaii goes in on a septic system, not a cesspool, and plenty of the systems already in the ground are reaching the age where parts fail. We install and repair septic systems across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. On the installation side we handle new homes and ohana units, the rebuilds that followed the 2018 eruption in lower Puna, and replacement systems for homes whose old cesspool or field has given out: the site evaluation, the Department of Health permit, the excavation in lava, the tank, the leach field or seepage bed on imported fill, and the inspection. On the repair side we fix what actually breaks: cracked lids and collapsed baffles, sewer lines crushed by rock settlement or invaded by roots, distribution boxes that send everything to one line, failed effluent pumps on lots that lift uphill, and leach fields that have gone wet. We find the real problem before we dig, because excavating lava to fix the wrong thing is an expensive mistake.

Emergency

Emergency Cesspool Service

A backed-up cesspool is not a next-week problem. It is sewage coming up in a shower or a floor drain, or surfacing in the yard, and it gets worse with every flush. On this side of the island it usually arrives with the weather: three days of rain saturate the rock around the pit, the pit stops taking water, and the house backs up all at once. We provide emergency cesspool and septic service across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We come out, pump the pit or the tank down to relieve the backup and get your drains working, find out why it failed, whether the pit has simply filled, the rock has sealed, a line is blocked or a pump has died, and tell you straight what it takes to keep it from happening again. The first job is to stop the mess and get your household running. The second is an honest answer about whether this cesspool has a future or whether it is time to talk about conversion.

Cesspool & Septic Service Across East Hawaii

Hilo Cesspool & Septic covers Hilo, the Puna subdivisions out to Pahoa and up to Volcano, and the Hamakua coast north to Laupahoehoe. We come to your property, in town or at the end of a cinder road. Don’t see your area? Call us; we likely cover it.

Sewage Backing Up or a Wet Yard? Don’t Wait.

A cesspool problem gets worse, and more expensive, the longer it sits. A few signs mean you should cut back on water and call today.

Backups mean stop using water

Sewage backing up into tubs, drains or toilets means the pit or tank has nowhere to put the water. Every flush and load of laundry makes it worse. We pump it down, find the cause, and get your house draining again.

A backup every time it rains hard

Three days of Puna rain saturate the rock around a cesspool, and a pit that is already half full of sludge has no buffer. If yours backs up with the weather, it is telling you something. A full pump-out buys relief, and the refill rate tells us whether the pit is still viable.

A wet spot or smell near the catchment

Standing water, spongy ground or a sewage odor over the pit or leach field means the system isn’t taking water the way it should. On a catchment lot you want that looked at before overflow gets anywhere near the tank or the gutters.

How It Works

Three steps, no runaround.

1. Call or request a quote

Call (808) 649-5223 or send the quote form. Tell us the subdivision or the street and what’s going on and we’ll give you a straight price and a real time.

2. Tell us about your system

Let us know whether it is a cesspool or a septic tank if you know, roughly where it is, when it was last pumped, and the symptom: a routine pump-out, a backup, a wet yard, a sale, or a conversion you want priced. That’s usually enough for an honest quote.

3. We come to your property

We locate and open the pit or tank, do the work on-site, most jobs in one visit, and show you what we find before recommending anything. No upsells, no surprises.

Questions We Hear a Lot

How often should a cesspool be pumped in Hilo or Puna?
Every two to four years for most households, and sooner on wet upland lots, for vacation rentals, and for a pit that has gone many years without service. A septic tank runs three to five years. If you cannot remember the last time, or you just bought the house, call and we will put you on a realistic schedule.
What is the difference between a cesspool and a septic system?
A cesspool is a single pit, usually drilled into the lava, where everything from the house lands and the liquid soaks out through the rock; there is no tank and no treatment. A septic system has a watertight tank that settles the solids and a leach field or seepage bed that takes the liquid. Most older homes on this side of the island are on cesspools; newer builds and conversions are on septic. We service both.
Do I have to convert my cesspool to septic?
The state has set a deadline for every cesspool in Hawaii to be converted or closed, and the Department of Health controls the schedule and the exceptions. Most homeowners are not required to convert today. A failing pit, a home sale or a remodel are what usually move it up. We will tell you where your system actually stands and what a conversion would involve on your lot, without pushing you into one you do not need yet.
How do I get a quote?
Call with roughly where the cesspool or tank is and what is going on: a routine pump-out, a backup, a wet yard, an inspection for a sale, or a conversion you want priced. That is usually enough for a straight price on pumping over the phone. Conversions get a written price after we walk the lot. You can also send details through the quote form.
Can you come the same day?
Same-day service is often possible, especially for a backup or an overflow. Ask when you call and we will give you a real time, not a runaround. Tell us about the road and the driveway so we bring the right truck.
What areas do you cover?
Hilo and the homes above it, the Puna subdivisions from Keaau, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Orchidland and Hawaiian Acres through Kurtistown, Mountain View and Volcano and out to Pahoa and Hawaiian Beaches, and the Hamakua coast north through Papaikou, Pepeekeo and Honomu to Laupahoehoe. If you are not sure we reach you, call and ask; we likely do.
