Cesspool Pumping in Pahoa

Cesspool pumping is the single most common job on this side of the island, and it is what we do most. A cesspool is a pit in the lava with no tank in front of it, so everything from the house lands in the same hole: liquid soaks out through the rock, solids and grease build up on the bottom and the walls. Over the years that buildup seals the rock, the pit holds more and drains less, and one day a heavy Hilo rain or a houseful of guests pushes it over. We pump cesspools across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We locate the pit, open the lid or cap, pump it down completely, remove the sludge layer rather than just skimming the liquid, and tell you straight how fast it is refilling and how much life the pit has left. The cheapest cesspool job is the pump-out you do on time; the most expensive is the conversion you are forced into after a backup.

Cesspool and septic service in Pahoa

Pahoa is the main street of lower Puna, an old plantation town of raised wooden storefronts where Highway 130 ends and the roads to Kalapana, Pohoiki and Kapoho begin. Everything around it is unsewered. Nanawale Estates and Leilani Estates to the east, Kalapana Seaview Estates toward the coast, the farm lots along Highway 132 and the homes scattered up the old lava flows all run on a cesspool or a septic system, and most of them catch their own rainwater. Lower Puna is also where the 2018 eruption rewrote the map: Leilani Estates lost whole streets, Kapoho and its tide pools are gone, and the rebuilding that followed went in on new septic systems because new construction cannot use a cesspool. That leaves Pahoa with the full spread of what we do, from pumping a forty-year-old pit behind a plantation house to installing a permitted system on a fresh lot, with home-sale inspections in between as the area turns over. The ground here is some of the youngest on the island, a mix of a‘a that drains like a sieve and pahoehoe that will not take a shovel, which shapes every conversion. We work Pahoa and the subdivisions around it every week. Tell us the subdivision and the road and we will give you a straight answer and a real price.

Common Cesspool & Septic Issues in Pahoa

The cesspool and septic problems we see most around here, and how we handle them.

Cesspools on a‘a and pahoehoe

Lower Puna lots sit on young lava. A cesspool drilled into loose a‘a drains fast until the sludge seals it; one in dense pahoehoe may never have drained well to begin with. We read the refill rate while pumping and tell you which kind you have and what it means for the pit’s future.

Rebuilding after the 2018 eruption

Homes rebuilt in and around Leilani Estates and elsewhere in lower Puna go in on septic systems, not cesspools, and they need the permit, the design and a leach field built on fill over new rock. We handle the installation and the inspection, and we pump those new tanks on schedule afterward.

Catchment tanks a few steps from the pit

Nearly every Pahoa-area home is on rainwater catchment, and on a smaller Nanawale or Seaview lot the tank and the cesspool can be close neighbors. We keep hoses and any spill clear of the tank, and we point out tight setbacks because an inspector will too.

Cesspool Pumping in Pahoa: FAQs

Do you come out to Pahoa, Nanawale, Leilani Estates and Kalapana Seaview?
Yes. Pahoa and the subdivisions around it are a core part of our area. Private roads, unpaved streets and long driveways are normal here; tell us the road and the access when you call so we bring the right truck.
I am rebuilding in lower Puna. Can I put in a cesspool?
No. New construction requires a septic system or another approved wastewater system. We handle the site evaluation, the Department of Health permit, the installation on fill over the lava, and the final inspection.
My cesspool backs up after a few days of rain. Is it finished?
Not necessarily. Rain saturates the rock around the pit so it cannot take the household flow on top of the water already in the ground. A full pump-out usually gives real relief, and what we see while pumping tells us whether the pit is simply full or has sealed for good.
How do I know my cesspool needs pumping?
Slow drains and gurgling toilets throughout the house, a sewage smell in the yard after rain, wet or spongy ground near the pit, or the water level sitting near the top when you lift the lid. If it has been more than two or three years, or you have never had it done since buying the house, schedule it before the symptoms start.
My cesspool backs up every time it rains hard. Is that normal?
It is common in Puna and Hilo, and it is a warning. Heavy rain saturates the rock around the pit so it cannot take any more from the house, and a pit that is already half full of sludge has no buffer. A thorough pump-out often buys real relief, and the refill rate we see while pumping tells us whether the pit is simply full or has stopped draining altogether.
Can you pump a cesspool on a catchment lot without contaminating my water tank?
Yes. We keep the hose run and any spill well clear of the catchment tank and its gutters, and we work from the downhill side where we can. If your cesspool and your catchment sit unusually close together, we will point it out, because that is also something an inspector will flag at a sale.
Will pumping fix a cesspool that has stopped draining?
It relieves the backup and gives you time, but if the rock around the pit has sealed, the pit will fill again on household use alone. We will tell you honestly if that is what we see. At that point the options are a new pit where the county still allows one, or a conversion to septic, and we can walk you through both.
