Septic Tank Pumping & Cleaning in Mountain View, HI

Routine septic tank pumping and a full cleaning of the sludge and scum layers, with the baffles and lids checked while the tank is open.

Septic Pumping in Mountain View

If your home is one of the newer builds or converted systems on this side of the island, you have a septic tank instead of a cesspool, and it needs pumping just the same. Solids settle to the bottom of the tank, grease and scum float to the top, and the clear liquid in between flows out to a leach field or seepage bed in the lava. Pumping removes the solids and scum before they can wash out and clog the field, which is the expensive part of the system and the hardest part to rebuild in rock. We pump and clean septic tanks across Hilo, Puna and the Hamakua coast. We locate and open the tank, pump it down completely, break up and remove the packed sludge rather than skimming the liquid, check the inlet and outlet baffles and the lids, and give you a realistic interval based on your tank size and household. Converted cesspool systems, vacation rentals around Volcano and Hilo, and homes bought with no service history are the ones that most often need the full cleaning rather than a quick pump.

Cesspool and septic service in Mountain View

Mountain View is the upper Puna village on Highway 11 at about 1,500 feet, where the rainforest closes in, the air turns cool, and the subdivisions behind it, Fern Acres, Fern Forest, Eden Roc and the upper reaches of Hawaiian Acres, stretch back into some of the wettest country on the island. The village has its old plantation core and a scattering of farms and nurseries along the highway, and nearly everything is on catchment and on its own wastewater system. This is where the rain is heaviest in our whole service area, in places well past 150 inches a year, and wastewater here lives with that. Cesspools sit in rock that is wet nearly all the time, fern forest holds water on the surface for days after a storm, and a pit that is also full of sludge has no margin at all. The subdivisions behind Mountain View also hold a lot of part-time, off-grid and newly arrived owners, on long unpaved roads, with systems that came with no paperwork. We pump, inspect, convert and repair systems in Mountain View and the subdivisions behind it, and we know what the roads are like after a week of rain. Tell us where you are and what the system is doing, and we will come ready and quote it straight.

Common Cesspool & Septic Issues in Mountain View

The cesspool and septic problems we see most around here, and how we handle them.

The wettest ground we work in

Mountain View and the subdivisions behind it see some of the heaviest rain on the island, and the fern forest floor holds it. Cesspools here refill from the ground and stay wet year-round. Regular pumping keeps a buffer in the pit; a pit that has stopped draining will show it in the refill rate, and we will tell you.

Off-grid homes on long unpaved roads

Fern Acres, Fern Forest and Eden Roc have homes a mile or more back on cinder roads that soften after rain. We ask about the road when you call, bring enough hose to park on solid ground, and reach the pit from there.

Systems with no history

A lot of upper Puna homes sold with a cesspool and no paperwork. We locate it, pump it, read the walls and the refill, and give the new owner a straight picture of its condition and what the state deadline means for it.

Septic Pumping in Mountain View: FAQs

Do you serve Fern Acres, Fern Forest and Eden Roc as well as Mountain View village?
Yes. The subdivisions behind Mountain View are part of our regular upper Puna route. Tell us the road and how far back the lot sits, and whether the road has been soft lately, so the truck comes ready.
Why does my cesspool stay full even when it has not rained for a few days?
At this elevation the ground rarely dries out, and the rock around the pit holds water for a long time after a storm. The pit refills from the ground. It can still work as long as there is room for the household, but the sludge has to be pumped regularly and the pit’s drainage checked.
Can a septic system be built in rainforest ground like this?
Yes. A conversion here is a raised leach bed on imported fill, sized for the rainfall as well as the house, or an aerobic treatment unit where the lot or the ground calls for it. The design accounts for the wet ground and the catchment setbacks, and the Department of Health reviews it.
I converted from a cesspool a few years ago. Do I still need pumping?
Yes, and more than most people expect. A converted system has a real tank now, and the solids that used to drop into the pit are collecting in it. Plan on a pump-out every three to five years, sooner for a big household or a rental, so they never reach the new leach field or bed.
What happens if I never pump my septic tank?
Solids build up until they wash out into the leach field or seepage bed and clog it. At that point you get slow drains, backups and wet ground, and the fix is no longer a pump-out; it is rebuilding the field, which on a lava lot means engineered fill and a permit. Pumping on schedule is cheap insurance against that.
Do I need to find the tank before you come?
No. Locating the tank is part of the job, which matters on homes that changed hands with no paperwork. If you do know where the lids are, or have risers at grade, that saves digging time and money, but if not we will find it.
